The aim of the RNH Senior Program is to provide three groups of people opportunities to meet their reciprocal needs. For the home-bound elderly, our programs help them combat isolation and avoid loneliness. This helps them remain at home and avoids a nursing home or institutional placement before it is absolutely necessary. For our senior volunteers, there are a multitude of meaningful activities and a sense of belonging that help them remain active and vital. For the teens, it is an opportunity to help seniors while learning from a mentor and bridging the gap between the generations.
Telephone Reassurance Program
Personalized calls Monday through Friday, fully operated by volunteers, linking homebound elderly to the community while ensuring their safety and well-being.
Connecting underserved youth with seniors, bridging the gap between the generations and providing opportunties for mutual growth and support.
Our annual Senior Splash takes place each June and provides a full day of summer fun for local seniors.
To volunteer, or if you know someone who would benefit from our services, please call (718) 549-8100 x129 or email Zenobia Kelly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Health & Harmony Program
Since 1872, the Riverdale Neighborhood House has served as a center for community outreach, addressing the needs of individuals and families at every stage of life. Our new Health and Harmony Program continues that tradition, providing programs to nourish your spiritual self to bring you inner peace, and programs to fortify and improve your mind and body to enable a longer, healthier, more fulfilling life. Our approach is personal; in a world being taken over by online modalities and smartphone apps, with us it is, and will always be, personal.
Level 1 Hatha Yoga – Saturdays 9.00 – 10.15am. Carly, Riverdale Neighborhood House.
Designed for beginners and experienced students who want to practice classic poses at a comfortable and steady pace, this class will help you feel centered and refreshed. Students will work on connecting breath to each movement – moving and flowing through gentle warm ups, building strength with standing and seated sequences, and wind down the class with a deep relaxation. All levels welcome.
Instructor: Carly LaScala
Yoga has been a part of Carly’s life since her early teens. It’s the way she finds peace and levity amidst the ebbs and flows of life. The desire to share that ease and clarity with others led her to deepen her practice, training in yoga and meditation. Carly has completed her 200-hour yoga certification, prenatal yoga certification, as well as a meditation teacher training. Carly believes that every time we unroll our mat, we have another chance to gain a new perspective on a pose, a breathing technique, a state of mind. We always have the ability to start anew. The RNH community of yogis has been a gift to Carly’s life, and she looks forward to Saturday mornings with them.
Guided Meditation – Neem Dewji is the director of Yoga for Bliss, now in it’s 17th year. Yoga for Bliss partners with RNH for our Level 1 Hatha yoga and Guided Meditation programs. Neem teaches yoga, meditation and stress management. “It’s wonderful to have been able to create a yoga and wellness community in Riverdale and Yonkers, and we have such a dedicated group at Neighborhood House! In these fast, busy, and stressful times, we offer a space where people can come together with similar intention: to stop, to release stress, and to remember their more expanded and sacred sense of Self.”

Dancing With Grief: Many of us feel in the dark about grief. Everyone has different ideas about how it should work. Society thinks of saying goodbye as closure. In Dancing with Grief we reconsider these expectations. Loss is unavoidable and yet it frequently catches us unprepared. In our lifetimes we lose loved ones, dreams, property, relationships. So how do we handle our grief when it enters our life, saps our vitality and affects our quality of life? This workshop provided information and strategies to help us cope.
Mojo Weight Loss: A groundbreaking approach to weight loss! Instead of, “When I lose the weight then I will feel good about myself”, the Mojo mindset says “I feel good, sexy and attractive right now as I embark upon taking the weight off”. The Mojo Mindset harnesses our inner strength and belief in ourselves. A cleanse, an eating and supplement plan, a weekly affirmation, and more, are part of the program. Taught by Jacqui Justice, MS, CNS, in private practice as a nutritionist since 1996, Jacqui has been widely quoted in national and local publications.
Introduction to Meditation: Learn the basic techniques of meditation and the underlying philosophy of setting free, and reconnecting with, your real, fully alive self. Think of a time or even a just moment in your life when you truly felt fully alive. The practices you will learn in this class will help get you back to that place. Taught by Merrill Harmin, a wise and compassionate teacher and practitioner with 30 years’ experience. Many credit Merrill with having changed their lives.
